UMERKHADI PROJECT – EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT TO STUDENTS
Children come home from school with a bag full of homework, projects to be made, and books penned with notes. They have a hundred questions. And we “smart” parents have most of the answers. Their “after-school” timetables are chalked out, their evenings packed with back to back tuitions, balanced with hobby classes and parties on the weekends.
But there are also the less privileged children who go home to ill -literate or not so educated parents. They have no one to turn to with theirs whys and hows; neither do they have access to libraries or internet.
Schooling, without an adequate backup support at home, can lead to disinterest in education, poor performance, de-motivation and eventually dropping out.
This high rate of drop outs was what led to the commencement of TUITION CLASSES for underprivileged children, studying in various Marathi medium municipal schools in and around Umerkhadi area in Dongri. (Dongri municipal school, Hume high school and St Josephs School)
Set up within the premises of St Joseph’s church, since Nov 2004, the tuition classes recently celebrated 5 years. As on today there are a total of 88 students from Std 1 Std 10, who attend classes every evening regularly from Mon to Sat. 2 batches from 4 to 6 pm , and 6 to 8 pm , conducted by 4 teachers , who teach 3 languages and mostly all the subjects. English, Hindi, Marathi, science, Math, history and Geography, children are geared up to take on all of them and appear for their SSC exams.
The rents, stationery expenses, teachers fees are all taken care by RCBB, in order to provide free tutoring to the children. One sweeper too has been hired in order to maintain cleanliness. RCBB also organizes an annual picnic for them and celebrates important festivals / occasions with small parties. Diwali of 2009 was celebrated by having a singing and dance competition the best performers of course being rewarded. Now the kids are looking forward to the Christmas celebrations followed by an elocution competition. RCBB has also announced cash prizes for the top 3 performers in SSC 2010 SSC.
With these ongoing efforts, RCBB has tried that no child goes back to school with incomplete homework and unanswered questions. RCBB hopes these children never let go pursue further education and excel in any subject of their strength.
